Detailed Description
Think you know Paris? Think again. Paris offers a great opportunity to examine architecture, interiors and urbanism beyond the lecture theatre and design studio. Our four-day, three-night study trip invites you to experience the city not just as a tourist, but as an Architecture/Interiors student. Following Walter Benjamin’s understanding of the city as something encountered through walking (lots and lots of walking), you will immerse yourself within city. Exploring its pioneering urban districts, streets, and public spaces, as well as experiencing some of its landmark buildings and interiors, will allow you to observe how architecture, interiors and everyday life intersect.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will also have come into effect by time we travel. At London St Pancras International and Paris Gare du Nord, travellers will need to use self-service pre-registration kiosks before going through the ticket gates. Kiosks will be located in three areas at London St Pancras and at the entrance to the departures area on the Eurostar mezzanine in Paris Gare du Nord. Detailed maps will be shared closer to the launch date. (Correct at the time of uploading).
Programme
It is envisaged that the various cohorts and year groups will be provided with a detailed itinerary nearer the time of departure.
Museum, gallery and building visits:
While we will make the most of exploring the city on foot, we are scheduling several visits were there will be a charge upon entry. We are once again conscious of the need to provide value for money, and are doing our utmost to mitigate the cost of such visits. Unfortunately, in more recent years this has been made more complex by Brexit, when it comes to UK based student discounts in the EU.
We will encourage all students to join us on these visits, but participation will ultimately be a personal decision based on their respective budgets.
In the past we have also visited:
• Clichy-Batignolles Eco-district ZAC (zone d’aménagement concerté - ‘special
• planning district’)
• Pavillon de l’Arsenal 21 Boulevard Morland 75004 Paris
• Institut du Monde Arabe 1 Rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard 75005 Paris
• Fondation Cartier 261 Bd Raspail, 75014 Paris
• Deportation Martyrs Memorial 7 Quai de l’Archevêché 75004 Paris
• Les Deux Plateaux Palais Royal 75001 Paris
• Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris 17 Boulevard Jourdan 75014 Paris
Additional costs:
Daytime and Evening Meals:
Students will need to budget for their daily meals and any snacks during the trip, as these are not pre-arranged to allow flexibility in dining options and accommodate the various dietary requirements
Public Transport:
Local transportation within Paris (e.g., trams, buses, or metro fares) maybe included in the fee, via the Navigo Easy Pass. If not, most public transport in France, including Paris, allows you to tap in and out using a contactless bank card, credit card, or phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay, much like London’s system, this is the cheapest way to navigate the city, as we will be mostly walking as we move from one place to another.
Personal Expenses:
Costs for souvenirs, personal purchases, or any additional outings students may wish to undertake independently.
Luggage:
Please travel light! Attach a luggage label with our name and address to your baggage.
Safety:
Take sensible precautions against street and car crime. Don’t keep your passport, credit cards and other valuables in the same place; use the inside compartments in bags where possible. Carry your bag across your body rather than on your shoulder. Pickpockets can work in gangs: one to distract you while the other one goes into your bag. Keep your belongings close to you in restaurants and bars. Don’t be distracted around tourist attractions and cash points. Be aware of common scams used to obtain money from tourists.
Students have the right to cancel their booking without penalty if there is significant increase in cost.
Overseas Trips
· If you are eligible for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) then you will need to apply for one in advance of an overseas trip. Some insurers now insist that you hold an EHIC or GHIC. See https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card
· A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will replace the EHIC card for the majority of UK citizens. Existing EHIC cards will still be valid until their expiry dates.
· You will be required to submit a copy of your passport and visas to the Campus Registry Office at least 14 days in advance of the trip.
Please check the Gov.UK site for up to date information - https://www.gov.uk/
Additional Support
· If you have a disability and require any adjustments to your trip, please let your learning support manager know as early as possible (based in the Gateway on campus). If you do not do this, we may not be able to put these adjustments in place.
